FENSA installer categories determine how your installations should be registered and when an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) is required. Being in the correct category ensures compliance and helps avoid unnecessary costs.
Below is a summary of each category and when it applies:
Standard Installer
For installers working on domestic properties owned by private homeowners (e.g. Mr & Mrs Smith).
Applies to privately owned domestic dwellings
Insurance Backed Guarantee is mandatory for all installations
Commercial – 3rd Party
For installers working on a mix of private domestic properties and commercially owned domestic properties, or where the contract is with a commercial entity.
Applies to both private homeowners and commercially owned domestic properties
Insurance Backed Guarantee is not mandatory for commercially owned properties or commercial contracts
IBG is still required for private homeowner installations
100% Commercial / Commercially Owned
For installers who only work on domestic properties that are commercially owned (for example by a Local Authority, Housing Association, or where the installer owns the property).
No private homeowner work
Insurance Backed Guarantee is not mandatory
A declaration is required if your business changes into this category
Jersey Installer
For installers operating exclusively in Jersey.
Applies only to work carried out in Jersey
Subject to Jersey-specific requirements
If your work type changes, it’s important to notify FENSA so your installer category can be updated accordingly and registrations remain compliant.
